A “new frontier” that is proving difficult to reach? The division responsible for Horizon Worlds, the metaverse of Meta, posts a colossal loss for the year 2022. Why is Mark Zuckerberg’s heart project having so much trouble getting off the ground?

Meta’s metaverse continued to lose money in 2022
Horizon Worlds’ results weren’t particularly bright during the year, so this loss isn’t surprising, but its magnitude is notable. The project cost Meta $13.7 billion, while shareholders were already particularly wary of him. Yesterday, the giant published its quarterly results, which turned out to be generally more positive than expected. Enough to boost the share price, which has since taken +4%.
But the results of the division devoted to the metaverse remain catastrophic. She lost 4.28 billion dollars in the last quarter. Faced with this, the meager 727 million dollars in revenue generated over the past three months are of course not enough to stop the bleeding. As a reminder, the production of virtual reality headsets cost the company a substantial sum, in addition to the development of the virtual world of Horizon Worlds.

What future for Mark Zuckerberg’s metaverse?
Mark Zuckerberg has several times stood firm against the mistrust of shareholders, who fear that the project he loves so much will not take off with users. But it’s the fourth consecutive quarter of loss for the metaverse division of the company. Meta’s CEO, however, was confident a few months ago:
“We are clearly doing a major job. This is a massive task, which will often have to take several versions of the same product. to be widely adopted. »
But does this metaverse respond to a request? At present, it is doubtful when we know that Meta employees were forced to connect to Horizon Worlds. But Mark Zuckerberg confirmed the company’s ambitions in his call with shareholders:
“Our priorities have not changed. The two major technological waves that set our roadmap in motion are artificial intelligence today, and in the long term, the metaverse.»
According to the CEO of Meta, this will be partly based on the Quest 3, the future virtual reality headset developed by the company. Its performance would encourage exploration of the metaverse, and therefore bring in a new wave of users. Meta is in any case playing big on this initiativeand the company will be particularly watched in the coming months.
