Lionel Messi invests in a new blockchain startup
The funding round, which reached $21 million, was announced yesterday. Lionel Messi supported Matchday through its venture capital fund Play Time. Other contributors include Courtside Ventures, Greylock, HackVC, Capricorn Investment Group and Horizons Ventures. The exact contribution of Lionel Messi is not known.
Matchday is a blockchain-based video game startup, which focuses on the field of football. It was founded by soccer player Alexia Putellas, who has been awarded the Ballon d’Or several times. The idea is to bring blockchain games to users who don’t particularly use blockchain. Matchday’s other co-founder, Derrick Ko, explains:
“We are building this for a hitherto untapped audience in the football community.»
The team has a certain pedigree, which goes beyond football. In the branch intended for development, we find Sébastien de Halleux, a former employee of the gaming company Electronic Arts (EA).
