Ledger, the famous French manufacturer of hardware wallets has launched Ledger Extension. This application and browser extension should help increase security in Web3, by showing exactly what will happen when a user signs a transaction on his wallet.

Ledger introduces Ledger Extension
While Ledger announced its browser extension almost a year ago now, it is now seeing the light of day after an open beta to 10,000 people. Originally called Ledger Connect, the application has been soberly renamed Ledger Extension :

Currently, Ledger Extension is only available on iOS and Mac with the Safari browserand will soon be launched on Windows and browsers built on Chromium, without a release date being revealed at this time.
In addition, the application works on Ethereum (ETH) as well as Polygon, and will support, in the future, all blockchains compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) as well as Solana (SOL). Also, Ledger Extension is only functional with Ledger Nano X hardware wallets via Bluetooth connection. The possibility of using it with a Ledger Nano S with a USB-C cable will also come later.

An extension to increase security in Web3 environments
One of the problems with many Web3 wallets is that they don’t fully show what will happen when a transaction is signed. From this postulate, it is easier for a malevolent actor trick a target into interacting with a fraudulent smart contractimpersonating it as a legitimate application with the aim of stealing funds.
Ledger Extension therefore wishes to provide a solution to this problem by showing the user exactly what to expect when they validate their transactionboth from the browser extension and from the smartphone application.
Thanks to the “Web3 Checks” functionality, a warning is sent in case of suspected interaction with a malicious smart contract, while “Wallet Preview” must indicate precisely which assets will enter or leave the wallet.
Ian Rogers, Chief Experience Officer of Ledger, summarized the mission of this new product, and also suggests that safety has often been overlooked in industry :
“The Ledger Extension is emblematic of where Ledger is going in 2023: to scale, we simply need to combine ease of use and peace of mind with uncompromising security. […] Ledger Extension solves one of the biggest problems in Web3 today: connectivity. It makes interacting with applications and platforms easier and faster than ever, while remaining secure. »
Note also that Ledger Extension will also be available for use with Stax, the brand’s new hardware wallet planned for this summer.
