ConsenSys, the parent company of the famous MetaMask wallet, revealed that some of its customers were potentially exposed to a data leak. About 7,000 users had some of their personal data, including their email address, exposed following a security breach at one of ConsenSys’ service providers that provides technical support services.

Small data leak at MetaMask
ConsenSys, the parent company of the popular Ethereum wallet (ETH) MetaMask, revealed yesterday that about 7,000 of its users had had some of their personal data (including their email address) exposed following a security breach.
More precisely, it is not directly ConsenSys which found itself directly confronted with a security breach, but one of its service providers, which, in this case, provides technical support services to its customers. The name of the company concerned was not specified.
So, people who have never had dealings with ConsenSys customer service can be reassured, the few thousand people concerned are those who would have transmitted some of their personal information to ConsenSys support between August 1, 2021 and February 10, 2023.
However, the information presented remains to be put into perspective, because only the email address of the users would be concerned in the majority of cases, apart from potential additional information that they could have disclosed in an incident ticket such as their name, first name, telephone number or even their postal address. According to ConsenSys, these cases would be marginal.
According to the statement, the incident – which will have lasted a year and a half – would no longer be relevant, and there would therefore be no more leaks to be feared when contacting ConsenSys customer service. Moreover, if approximately 7,000 people would be affected a priori, this figure must however be compared with the total number of MetaMask users, which is estimated at around 30 million people.

Beware of phishing!
Although this flaw is problematic, it does not turn out to be dramatic. However, users affected by this data leak must be particularly vigilant about phishing attempts against them.
Indeed, the mere fact that a malicious individual has knowledge of the email address of a MetaMask user will mechanically lead him to try to target him first. We can therefore only recommend that you be doubly careful if you are concerned, as ConsenSys also says in its press release:
“As always, we ask that you be extremely vigilant of any suspicious activity and any unsolicited contact you may receive by phone, text, email or instant message. If you have doubts about a request or a message, do not open it, do not reply or click on any link and delete it. »
Moreover, according to a recent Kaspersky report, phishing attempts increased by more than 40% from the year 2021 to the year 2022 in the cryptocurrency sector alone. Attempts that multiply especially during airdrop distributions, where the easy win can sometimes turn into a very unpleasant mishap.
